Nan Tiernan vigorously pursues your case, working for you and the best interests of your child, from your point of view.
The Nan Tiernan Law Firm has litigated hundreds of divorce and child custody cases across Iowa State for the past 14 years. Nan Tiernan works in the Des Moines area and appears in court in the surrounding counties:
Polk, Warren, Dallas, Story, Madison, Boone, Marion, Jasper, and Clarke counties; this includes Des Moines, West Des Moines, Urbandale, Clive, Johnston, Altoona, Ankeny, Boone, Ames, Knoxville, Winterset, Waukee, Adel, Newton, Osceola, and all the little towns between.
Our firm believes in a strong approach to family law. We will work with you and your support system to get you the resolution for your family law matter that will work for you down the years. If your situation has changed, we may be able to modify your decree to get where you want to be.
We will enforce your Decree if you need to do so.
If you are just starting a divorce or modification case, or a father's rights paternity action, you may achieve a mediated agreement that we turn into a Final Decree. This is what we call "the court order" which must be obeyed. Or sometimes you will receive that Final Decree -- (the Court Order) --after a trial. After we receive a court order concerning your matter, we will work with you to enforce the court order so the other party understands that court orders must be followed.

DO IT YOURSELF DIVORCE
By "do it yourself, we mean that
either you and your spouse each represent yourself in the divorce, or one of you has an attorney and the other one represents themselves. I
If each of you is not represented , then you will need to research
Iowa Code, Iowa caselaw, and
local court rules in order to
proceed correctly. The Iowa State Supeme Court now allows us to represent you in a limited way, so you may want to hire us for certain
things, like initially fully advising you, ($315), drafting the Petition for Dissolution ($315), supporting you during mediation ($640) preparing the chiild support worksheet, (315)( or reviewing their child support worksheet ($315).
If only one of you is represented, and the other is not, and you are the one who is not represented, then you are pro se. You and your spouse may have agreed on certain things, but beware of what the attorney puts in the final decree. MOST OF THE TIME, WHATEVER YOU VERBALLY AGREE TO, BY LAW, GETS "SUBSUMED" (melted into) THE FINAL WRITTEN DECREE.
After a decree is signed, it is hard to argue that the decree does not represent what you agreed to! You can call our firm to review your final decree, or represent you in a limited way in any part of the divorce process.
Be sure and get an attorney to represent you in reviewing the final decree that is put together. Attorneys are sneaky, and if an attorney represents the other side he/she will try to get the best deal for his/her client. There may be language in the Decree that is not in your best interests and you may be hating yourself if you sign the decree! Call our firm to review the Decree before signing on the dotted line. Its the rest of your life! Let's get the Decree right.
If your marriage is starting to bend, only you or your spouse can say whether it can be saved. If only one of you says it can't be saved, the other one, by law, can ask the court to order some marriage counseling.
But if the other party says the marriage can't be saved, that is the reason given under the law, for a divorce. This is a "no fault" state, so no one can legally blame anyone -- at least in regard to the breakup of the marriage itself. (However, in regard to the children -- it is another matter).
What we put in the Divorce Petition is: "the legitimate objects of marriage have been destroyed and there remains no reasonable possibility that this marriage can be saved; counseling should be waived." Click Here to
email our firm about your case.
